Why It Matters
Almost every fat-loss method that "works" works because it creates a calorie deficit — what actually differs between approaches is how much muscle you keep and how long you can sustain it.

Keto, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, and every other diet "trick" only work to the extent they help you eat fewer calories than you burn — none of them bypasses energy balance.
🎯 Spot reduction doesn't exist
Ab exercises don't preferentially burn belly fat, and where fat comes off first is determined by genetics and your somatotype, not which muscle you trained that day.
💪 A deficit can cost you muscle too
Without enough protein and resistance training, a chunk of the weight lost in any deficit is muscle, not fat — which lowers your metabolic rate and makes the next stage harder.
⏳ Speed trades off against sustainability

Tier S — Non-negotiable
A moderate, sustained deficit
✔10-20% below maintenance, held consistently — the deficit does the actual work; every other item on this list exists to protect what you keep while it happens.
High protein intake
✔Roughly 1.6-2.2g per kg of bodyweight — protects muscle in a deficit far better than calories alone, and its satiety effect makes the deficit itself easier to hold.
Keep training hard, not just cardio
✔Resistance training gives your body a reason to keep the muscle you have — dropping it in favour of cardio-only during a cut is the single most common way people end up "skinny fat" at the end.
Track a weekly trend, not daily readings

Tier A — Strong case
NEAT — daily movement outside training
✔Walking, taking stairs, fidgeting — non-exercise activity thermogenesis can swing daily energy expenditure by hundreds of calories and tends to unconsciously drop as you diet, which is worth actively countering.
Planned diet breaks
✔A week or two back at maintenance every 6-12 weeks of dieting helps with adherence and gives hunger hormones a break — a short pause, not a reason to stop.
Fibre and protein for satiety

Protecting sleep
✔Poor sleep reliably increases hunger and cravings the next day — see the sleep guide. A deficit is hard enough without also fighting sleep-deprived appetite.
Tier B — Situational
Added cardio
~Useful for creating extra room in the deficit or for cardiovascular health, but it's a smaller lever than diet — easy to "earn back" with extra eating if you're not careful.
Intermittent fasting
~A scheduling tool that helps some people naturally eat less — it has no special metabolic effect beyond that, so it's worth using only if it genuinely makes adherence easier for you.
Precise food tracking
~Weighing food and logging calories improves accuracy and is genuinely useful while learning portion sizes, but isn't mandatory forever once you've built a feel for your intake.
Tier C — Skip it
Crash diets and extreme deficits
✘Very large deficits accelerate muscle loss, tank training performance and mood, and are the most reliably abandoned — usually followed by regaining more than was lost.
Cutting an entire macronutrient to zero
✘Eliminating carbs or fat entirely isn't necessary for fat loss and usually just makes a deficit harder to sustain and training harder to recover from.
Excessive cardio instead of fixing the diet
✘Hours of cardio to "earn" a diet that isn't actually in a deficit is a losing trade — it adds fatigue and recovery cost for a fraction of what fixing the food would do directly.
Fat burner supplements
✘Already rated on the supplements page — minor stimulant effects at best, real side-effect risk, and no substitute for the deficit itself.
Myths, Debunked
Myth: "Carbs make you fat."
Reality: Excess calories make you fat, regardless of source — carbs are only a problem for fat loss if eating them pushes you over maintenance.
Myth: "You can out-train a bad diet."
Reality: It's far easier to eat 500 extra calories in minutes than to burn them off training — diet is the primary lever, training protects muscle while it happens.
Myth: "Ab exercises burn belly fat."
