Two very different biomechanics books, one shared thread: pain and poor performance are usually a movement-quality problem, not a single weak or tight muscle. This guide summarises the practical takeaways from Kelly Starrett's Becoming a Supple Leopard and Naudi Aguilar's The Power of Posture (the book behind the Functional Patterns method) — and is honest about where each one's claims are well supported vs. overreaching. Why It Matters

Both books argue that conventional training and rehab often treat symptoms — a tight hip, a sore shoulder — without addressing the movement pattern that created them.

🧵 Tissue Quality

Starrett's term for the state of muscles, tendons, and fascia — restricted by adhesions and scar tissue built up from repetitive movement and sitting, and improved with tools like foam rollers and lacrosse balls.

📍 Joint-Centred Position

A neutral spine and a braced midline under load — Starrett's case that most injuries happen when a joint is loaded outside its stable, "centred" position, not because a muscle was simply too weak.

🚶 Gait Mechanics

Aguilar's focus: walking, running, and throwing all rely on contralateral reciprocation — the opposite arm and leg swinging together — and rotation through the trunk. Training that ignores this pattern trains a body shape, not the pattern itself.

🔗 Integrated vs. Isolated

Functional Patterns' central critique of conventional gym training: isolating a muscle (leg extensions, cable flyes) trains it out of the kinetic chain it actually works in during real movement.

These aren't equally rigorous. Starrett's mobility work sits close to mainstream sports medicine; Aguilar's stronger claims are disputed within the strength & conditioning community and shouldn't be taken as settled science.

Mobility & tissue prep (Starrett)

Self-myofascial release and owning end-range positions have decent short-term evidence for range of motion and perceived soreness. The idea that it fixes long-term tissue "adhesions" is more speculative — treat it as useful practice, not a proven mechanism.

Training gait patterns (Aguilar)

Multi-planar, contralateral training (carries, rotational work, sprint mechanics) is a reasonable addition to a program and reflects how the body actually moves day to day. Reasonable idea, thin direct evidence for the specific method as taught.

"Isolation training is broken / causes disease"

Functional Patterns' stronger public claims — that conventional strength training and bodybuilding-style isolation work are fundamentally harmful — go well beyond the evidence and have drawn direct pushback from strength & conditioning researchers (Bret Contreras publicly challenged Aguilar to a debate over exactly this). Decades of research support isolation and bilateral lifting as safe and effective; treat this specific claim as marketing, not biomechanics.

Tier S — Non-negotiable

Brace before you load

A neutral spine and a braced midline, set before the bar moves — not fixed mid-rep. This is Starrett's "joint-centred position" applied to every lift, every set.

Own the position you train in

Spend time actively holding the bottom of a squat, an overhead position, or a deep hinge — not just passively stretching into it. A position you can't control under load isn't mobility yet.

Tissue prep before training

A few minutes of foam roller or lacrosse ball work on the areas you're about to load — Starrett's "tissue quality" practice — before mobility drills, not instead of them.

Tier A — Strong case

Train contralateral patterns

Loaded carries, rotational throws, and sprint or gait drills alongside your straight-line lifts — Aguilar's point that walking, running, and throwing all rely on opposite arm/leg coordination your program should occasionally train directly.

Expose asymmetries with single-side work

Single-leg and single-arm variations reveal a side that's compensating in a way bilateral lifts can hide — useful diagnostic, not a replacement for your main lifts.

Tier B — Situational

Cable/band multi-planar drills

Functional Patterns-style resisted rotation and gait drills can be a useful accessory, but there's nothing magic about the specific tool — a cable machine or resistance band does the same job.

Dedicated mobility tools

Theracane, PVC pipe, voodoo floss — genuinely useful for targeting a specific stuck spot, but a lacrosse ball and some patience covers most of the same ground.

Tier C — Skip it

Dropping isolation & bilateral lifting entirely

Squats, bench, deadlifts, and isolation accessory work have decades of evidence behind them for strength and hypertrophy. Add movement-pattern work to that base — don't discard the base for it.

One "correct" pattern for every body

Individual anatomy — hip structure, limb lengths, old injuries — means the same drill won't look identical on everyone. Treat any rigid, one-size-fits-all system with suspicion, including this one.

Before You Start

  • This is education, not physiotherapy. Persistent or sharp pain needs a professional assessment, not a mobility drill.
  • Don't self-diagnose a structural issue — a physio or sports doctor can rule out something a foam roller won't fix.
  • Keep your existing strength training. Everything above is additive to squats, hinges, presses, and pulls — not a replacement for them.
